This class is limited to 25 participants, so RSVP now to get in!

The world is abuzz with credit card sized computers that are inexpensive and easy enough for home hobbyists, artists, and professionals to use.  One such computer is the Arduino, created by a group of Italian researchers and released freely to the world.

Important Note (Update 3/10):

We've had and instructor change for this course and are modifying the content of the course for a bit. This is still a hands on Arduino course. This is the first time we've run this course with this material, so be warned, things may have some rough edges, but we should be able to work through them. Since we've changed the course around, we are offering refunds if you'd rather not participate.

What is Hackidemia?  It is inspiring belief in a better tomorrow and equipping kids with the tools to build it.

Last Thursday, I was talking with Ryan Closner, a fellow from Code for America, about getting SYN Shop (and makerspaces in general) more involved with hackathons. With the advent of the Arduino, Raspberry Pi and the huge ecosystem of shields and libraries, working with hardware has never been easier.

I know it is a bit of short notice, but VegasHack is this coming Saturday (Feb 23rd) from 8a-6p. This time it is focused on open data and especially civic innovation and is being held in conjunction with International Open Data Day.

We could really use some people from SYN Shop to help with anything related to electronics and / or rapid prototyping but I'm sure you could jump in with your coding chops too. I plan to have the shop available and open if people need access to the tools.

More information and registration is here:

Hope to see you there!

Hey everyone, it's the Shapeways World Meetup day on the 28th!
I'm holding a meetup so we can discuss and show off Shapeways prints, and all other 3D printing stuff for that matter while we hang out!

Feel free to bring down your printer, or any prints you own or have made. It's a night to be excited about 3D printing and Shapeways being an awesome way to print your stuff if you don't have a printer.

SYN Shop, its board, and its founding members are proud to announce the soft opening of SYN Shop!

We have spent our Saturdays and free weekdays over the past several months, preparing our new space for members. Building furniture, gathering and assembling equipment and finalizing our policies. Now we are ready to start letting the general public in on the fun.

During the soft period, our operating hours will be:

Monday - 6p - 10p
Thursday - 6p - 10p
Saturday - 3p - 10p

We'll be adding more days and time slots as we continue to expand. You'll need to be a paying member ($40 / month) and have signed a waiver with us to use the space, but feel free to drop in for a quick tour and to learn why you'd want to join.

To become a paying member, follow the instructions here:

For our location and to see the most up to date hours, bookmark this page!

We hope to see you see you at the Shop soon!

This class will teach you techniques for designing objects with 3D panel based construction using Google/Trimble Sketchup. For the purposes of the class, I'll be walking you through creating a design for a cell phone holder for your bicycle. The techniques discussed work well with cardboard, acrylic, wood, plywood, and other panel type materials.

We have a number of things we need to get done this weekend.

* Cut and install the wall vent for the laser cutter

* Getting the table bolted and surfaced for the ShopBot

* We need storage shelves!

* Anchor the wall lockers so they don't tip over

* Run cabling for the access control system

* Cable management for the (HDMI + VGA) cable to the projector

* Lots of other projects that we need your help on.

Hope to see you there.
